It’s been 101 years since I started out,

as a budding promise.

One hundred and one years,

it seems to me.

I remember that time perfectly:

people were kind,

the world--a place of wonder.

Ready to go and see it I was,

just like my ancestors,

the Romans

in all their Olympian grandeur.

Still, somewhere I must have been cheated,

somebody must have lied,

because I never got

to the “Vici” part.

And I never got over that.
